Construction

Illustrated variant: CU/PVC/PVC unarmoured

Representative construction of CU/PVC/PVC unarmoured, with numbered components 1 to 4, explained below.
Representative construction of the selected variant; not to scale. Strand counts, colours and dimensions are illustrative.
  1. Copper conductors

The copper conductors form the current-carrying elements of the insulated cores.

  2. PVC insulation

PVC provides the electrical insulation around each conductor.

  3. Core assembly and fillers

The insulated cores are assembled together, with fillers occupying the spaces between them.

  4. PVC outer sheath

PVC forms the external protective covering around the cable assembly.

  • * denotes circular solid Class 1. Other conductors through 16 mm² are circular stranded Class 2; 25 mm² and larger are shaped stranded Class 2.
  • PVC compound alternatives are Type 5 heat-resisting 85°C with Type 9/ST2 sheath, or Type A/TI1 with ST1/TM1 sheath. This is not a universal operating-temperature rating.
