Representative illustration of one configuration. Actual construction, colour and dimensions depend on the selected specification.

Construction

Illustrated variant: Three-core CU/XLPE/CTS/PVC/SWA/PVC, selected PVC outer-sheath branch

Representative construction of Three-core CU/XLPE/CTS/PVC/SWA/PVC, selected PVC outer-sheath branch, with numbered components 1 to 9, explained below.
Representative construction of the selected variant; not to scale. Strand counts, colours and dimensions are illustrative.
  1. Compacted stranded copper conductors

Copper strands are compacted together to form each current-carrying conductor.

  2. Semiconducting conductor screens

A semiconducting layer around each conductor forms its inner electrical screen.

  3. XLPE insulation

Cross-linked polyethylene forms the main electrical insulation around each conductor.

  4. Semiconducting insulation screens

A semiconducting layer around each XLPE-insulated core forms its outer insulation screen.

  5. Copper tape screens

Copper tape forms the metallic screen around each individual insulated core.

  6. Core assembly and fillers

The insulated cores are assembled together, with fillers occupying the spaces between them.

  7. PVC bedding

PVC forms a bedding layer between the insulated core assembly and the armour.

  8. Steel wire armour

Steel wires form the mechanical armour around the cable.

  9. PVC outer sheath

PVC forms the external protective covering around the cable assembly.

The illustrated variant uses a PVC outer sheath. The source also lists a PE alternative; that alternative is not shown.
