Construction & selection

Single-core copper XLPE cable example with a copper-wire-and-tape screen, LSZH inner and outer sheaths, and aluminium-wire armour. The family designation follows the reference catalogue; exact U0/U(Um), insulation dimensions and project compliance must be confirmed in the current selected datasheet.

Construction

Illustrated variant: CU/XLPE/CWS/LSZH/AWA/LSZH

Representative construction of CU/XLPE/CWS/LSZH/AWA/LSZH, with numbered components 1 to 8, explained below.
Representative construction of the selected variant; not to scale. Strand counts, colours and dimensions are illustrative.
  1. Compacted stranded copper conductor

Copper strands are compacted together to form the current-carrying conductor.

  2. Semiconducting conductor screen

A semiconducting layer around the conductor forms the inner electrical screen.

  3. XLPE insulation

Cross-linked polyethylene forms the main electrical insulation around the conductor.

  4. Semiconducting insulation screen

A semiconducting layer around the XLPE insulation forms the outer insulation screen.

  5. Copper wire and tape screen

Copper wires and copper tape together form the metallic screen around the insulated core.

  6. LSZH inner sheath

The low-smoke zero-halogen inner sheath separates the screened core from the armour.

  7. Aluminium wire armour

Aluminium wires form the mechanical armour around the cable.

  8. LSZH outer sheath

The low-smoke zero-halogen material forms the external protective sheath.
